Activities

John Remnant's research activities to date span a range of cattle herd health topics, using a range of epidemiological methods. Topics investigated include reproduction, lameness, antimicrobial use and welfare. John is interested in ensuring research is relevant and applicable in practice and enjoys delivering knowledge exchange activities for veterinarians and farmers. 

More recently the focus of John's research has been on improving our understanding of careers decisions in veterinary students, to help inform strategies to mitigate the reported recruitment and retention crisis in production animal practice.


Biography

John Remnant joined the University of Calgary in 2023. John Remnant qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon from the University of Bristol in the UK in 2008. Following three years in mixed, and farm animal clinical practice John moved to the University of Nottingham to begin a position as a Senior Clinical Training Scholar (Resident) in Dairy Herd Health. John stayed at the University of Nottingham first as an Assistant and then Associate Professor of Farm Animal Health and Production. John is a Diplomate of the European College of Bovine Health Management, and a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Recognized Specialist in Cattle Health and Production. In 2019 John completed a PhD investigating methods of measuring and monitoring estrus detection in dairy herds. Also in 2019, John was awarded a Nuffield Farming Scholarship entitled "Ensuring the veterinary profession meets the needs of livestock agriculture now and in the future". John is a keen veterinary teacher and during his time at Nottingham coordinated several clinical rotations, as well as becoming the programme lead for the BVM BVS degree, helping to coordinate the design implementation of the new dual-intake curriculum.
